Which is the most venomous snake in the world ?
To find the answer to this question we need to travel to Australia,a country with a notorious concentration of many of the worlds deadly snakes. To define and understand which snake has the most toxic or “deadly” venom we need to take a closer look at the actual killing capacity of venom. This is where science comes in to part and tries to rank all snake venom based on its effectiveness to kill prey.
This is done by a scientific process to estimate the actual potency of venom called the LD/50 where scientists administer venom to lets say, 100 lab rats and see what is the minimum amount of venom they can inject the rats to kill 50% of the initial test group.
The snake with the most deadly venom according the LD/50 test is the Inland Taipan! (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) With an astonishing LD/50 of 0.025 mg/kg. This snake also comes by many different common names such us (Western Taipan, Fierce Snake,Small Scaled Snake)
The fierce snake lives in the dry and arid regions of central Australia. This means that it very rarely comes in to contact with humans, this is the main reason that even thought this snake has the most deadly venom, its not by far the most deadly in terms of human fatality’s.
